Andalucía first drive-in cinema to open this summer

Jul 26, 2021 What's happening?

You may have seen them in famous American movies such as Grease, but drive-ins have long become an almost forgotten icon of the 1950s, along with soda bars and roadhouses. Well, there may not be waitresses on roller skates, but for the rest the fifties are coming to the Costa del Sol with the opening of an iconic outdoor cinema at the Guadalhorce business park near Málaga. Just a short distance from the airport, it is also 20 minutes from your home in Higuerón West, so perfect for an outing on a balmy summer’s evening.

In addition to new movie releases, events and even concerts, the project inspired by the highly successful opening of a similar venue in Madrid in 2017, will be the second biggest of its kind in Europe. Measuring 16,000m2 in all, the Malaga Autocine will hold 250 cars as well as offering a chilled seating environment for 250 people in comfy sundeck chairs. New releases will alternate with popular classics and cinematic evergreens. “Málaga is a city of cinema and great weather, so we believe the conditions are right for this kind of venue to thrive and offer a unique experience,” said Cristina Porta, who together with business partner Tamara Istambul is the driving force behind the project.

In Madrid, they welcome 120,000 visitors per year in what is clearly a major revival that’s ideally suited to warm regions such as the Costa del Sol.

The drive-in cinema will of course also feature a restaurant, and moviegoers will be able to enjoy waiter delivery service for orders made from their car through a phone app. In addition, there will be charming food trucks nearby, offering a choice of snacks and meals, while the sound system offered provides cinema standard quality within the comfort of your car.

It’s a 21st century revival of a classic mid-century form of American entertainment and a great new leisure facility on the Costa del Sol.
